These fascinating artifacts echo forgotten cultures from the dawn of man. Hand carved bones have always been the definitive indicator of civilization in archeological sites. As humankind emerged from the darkness, they painted cave walls and carved images of motifs in totems and jewelry. We can imagine how much status and confidence was conveyed by symbols expressing a sophistication out of the mist.

The material is the bone of water buffaloes used in farming and consumed completely after a life of shared endeavors with the farmers’ families. The farmer then carves the bones in the off season to produce extra income. Buffaloes are raised as providers but more importantly for their hyper-efficiency in tilling rice fields. More people depend on the water buffalo than any other domestic animal.

We source these earrings from traditional producers in Bali, Indonesia and have them set in silver by hand. Authentic bone carving is now a lost process and skill because it doesn’t scale for industrial production and uniformity economy of scale. This man in the moon motif has been co-opted by industrial producers who use powdered material set in molds at industrial scales in China that has destroyed the market for authentic art. We, however, return to the roots with real artisans and material with a premium product authentically produced again after untold eons.
