Amethyst originates from the ancient Greek word for “not-intoxicated” since it was thought to prevent drunkenness. It has been used as jewelry by different cultures including Egyptians and Anglo-Saxon. This transparent purple crystal are variations of quartz minerals that contain more iron than usual, believably causing its famous and most sought after violet hue. Modern-day amethysts are mined in Brazil, South Korea and the state of Arizona.
