Male and Female Divine Devotees. Apsara Divine Dancers, Style of reign of Prasat Thong, c. early 17th century. This exquisite figure of a devoutly kneeling Heavenly Musician (apsaras) expresses both the divine serenity of Thai Buddhist music, as well as the serene musicality of Thai Buddhist devotion. A superb example of stunning artistic economy -one of the finest achievements of Thai art - it expresses that ineffable quality of Thai religious practice, which is at once both lyrical and pious, without ever being grave or sanctimonious. The apsara is attired in the sumptuous dress of the courtiers of the late Ayutthaya period, marked specifically by the spire-like crown ornamented with wing-like epaulettes and kanchiak (the decorative piece extending down behind the ear from the crown.) The leggings and apron are fashioned in imitation of intricate patterns embroidered in gold thread. Like the stupas of the Sukhothai period - whose roof finials her diadem imitates - the heavenly musician achieves a remarkably slender proportions without out sacrificing stability and strength.
