Vitarka Lotus Hand
The sacred and serene hand of the Buddha.The modernism of Sukhothai Buddhist art is evident in this simple but elegant understatement. The index and thumb meet in the vitarka mudra of teaching or argumentation; but this suffices to complete the Buddha’s mythic identification with his mother, Maya, as the primordial mother goddess of Asia. The fluid grace of its sinuous lines and liquid forms reinforce the association with the female powers ruling the life-giving waters. The gesture also evokes the Buddha’s descent from Tavatimsa Heaven, once the domain of Aryan solar gods, but now the realm where Maya reigns with the once omnipotent Hindu gods, Indra and Brahma, in her attendance. The scriptures tell us that the Buddha ascended to Heaven to preach the doctrine to his mother. But the mythic scene, with Mother above and son descending back towards us, tells a different tale: he is Her intermediary to mortals here on earth. All of this is summarized in the form and gesture of this slender, effeminate and elegant hand. It says all that is necessary about the ultimate source of the Buddha’s mythic authority, at least in matrilineal South-east Asia. Meanwhile, no one remembers, or cares, what happened to Buddha’s father, Suddodana. (He died at Kapilavastu, the royal seat of his Sakyas clan).
