King of Kings

Thailand, Style of reign of Prasat Thong, late Ayutthaya c. mid-17th centuryDignity and strength radiate from this portrait of the Buddha as supreme ruler in the secular as well as spiritual world. Combining spiritual and temporal powers in one image of the Buddha amplifies the his powers without sacrificing compassion. The benevolent Buddha looks down upon and cares for the world. During late Ayutthaya period, kings and the members of the royal family made images of the Buddha in royal attire and dedicated them to their ancestors. This identity between the royal court and the Buddha served to magnified traditional religious powers with more earthly and secular ones, giving rise to popular cults praying for riches and worldly success. In orthodox Theravada Buddhism there are no transcendent beings; neither the Buddha nor royalty is considered divine. Popular belief therefore attributes the iconography of the Buddha in royal attire to the Jataka (Birth Stories) episode of the Buddha converting the megalomaniac king Jambupati. To impress Jambupati, the Buddha conjured himself in the guise of rajadhiraja (king of kings) and, overwhelmed by the opulence and splendor, Jambupati paid obeisance to the Buddha and converted. Thus the sumptuous spectacle of court regalia, once associated with the Buddha as rajadhiraja, itself attained charismatic power.

Bronze Each piece you see here is made individually by our master artisans. The craftsmanship involved creates slight variations in color, finish, size, and shape - a quality we consider to be an added touch of uniqueness. The remarkable detail of our bronze sculptures is due to meticulous and labor-intensive care by Thai craftsmen to produce these unique sculptures of exquisite detail and timeless durability. Buffing, polishing, and patinising give each piece its final green-grey verdigris or bronze luster, which conveys the essence of what we at Eastern Serenity admire in South-East Asian art.
