Source of Creation
Thailand. Ratanakosin Style, c. 19th century,Vishnu is the Restorer and Preserver of the Universe in the classical Hindu trinity and known to his devotees as Prajapati (creator), the source of the Creation from which all existence flows. He is regarded as a god of mercy and benevolence and the worship paid him is often ecstatic. Hindu gods have been represented in Thai art since the early Sukhothai period when Brahmanical rituals were essential to the proper functioning of royal institutions and government. This image, however, is another example of Thai syncretism, since Vishnu, originally a solar deity, is found seated here on the seven-hooded cobra that is popular in Thailand and Cambodia, and which represents the indigenous genies of the earth. His four attributes - the discus, lotus, conch and mace - acquired abstruse philosophical meanings in Puranic and later Hindu literature. (RN)
Bronze Each piece you see here is made individually by our master artisans. The craftsmanship involved creates slight variations in color, finish, size, and shape - a quality we consider to be an added touch of uniqueness. The remarkable detail of our bronze sculptures is due to meticulous and labor-intensive care by Thai craftsmen to produce these unique sculptures of exquisite detail and timeless durability. Buffing, polishing, and patinising give each piece its final green-grey verdigris or bronze luster, which conveys the essence of what we at Eastern Serenity admire in South-East Asian art.
